Sir Stephen Harold Spender (February 28, 1909 - July 16, 1995) was an English poet and novelist who worked with the themes of social injustice and class struggle. Spender was born in London and educated at University College, Oxford. He was mentored by W. H. Auden with whom he maintained a life-long friendship. Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973), poet, was born in York, England, on February 21, 1907. He attended Christ Church, Oxford, from 1925-1928, then served as a schoolmaster in various institutions in England and Scotland from 1930 to 1935, including The Downs School in Colwell.
